I visited him at his studio today and collected a number of the finished works. The very large paintings he is currently working on are absolutely stunning and we are really looking forward to showing them in the gallery.Clark Art Gallery · Yesterday at 7:03am · We’re sorry to see Trevor Grimshaw’s wonderful graphite work, “The Viaduct” go to a new home.
It was one of 4 Grimshaws sold in a very busy day in the gallery yesterday. At 18” x 26.5”, this is a large work for Grimshaw and it was the star piece in his Dark Horizons exhibition at the Astley Cheetham Gallery in Stalybridge in Spring 1979. It was also featured on the front of the exhibition card Trevor Grimshaw was a master in using graphite to create wonderfully evocative images of the post-industrial North.
L.S. Lowndes was known for choosing unassuming local subjects direct from life wherever he lived.
“No Through Road , a 20” x 16” oil painted in 1974 is a typical street scene from his home town of Stockport, even though he was living in Gloucestershire in the year it was painted. Alan Lowndes in one of my favourite northern school artists and I feel his work is still undervalued. He... has been likened in style to the more famous L.S. Lowry and they were both represented by Crane Kalman Gallery, but Lowndes was very much in the shadow of Lowry when they were exhibiting together.
Fellow artist Sir Terry Frost RA contended that Lowndes surpassed Lowry in greatness and scope. Lowndes was not a prolific artist, he died in 1978 aged 57 and according to his widow Valerie, he only produced 750 works during his lifetime. http://bit.ly/2DfQ1PG See MoreClark Art Gallery · January 17 at 3:07am · Just added to our Winter Show, a lovely painting by William Ralph Turner. This street is in the heart of Stockport’s town centre, just off Hillgate and Lowry painted it on a number of occasions from the 1930s. This part of Stockport has changed considerably, Crowther Street became very run down and was demolished as part of slum clearance.
The houses on the right hand side of the street were later rebuilt in a heritage style. We currently have a painting of the same scene by Macclesfield Artist Helen Clapcott which shows the re-development in progress. http://bit.ly/2FJ4kO6Clark Art Gallery · January 16 at 3:00am · This my first day back in the rainy north after a break in sunnier climes, so I think Theodore Major’s “Industrial Landscape with Chimney and Telegraph Pole” is the perfect painting to feature today.
