The Raleigh Ringers is an internationally acclaimed, advanced community handbell choir based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since its founding in 1990, The Raleigh Ringers has been dazzling concert audiences with unique interpretations of sacred, secular and popular music, including famous rock ‘n’ roll tunes arranged just for handbells. Under the direction of Penn State alum David M. Harris, The Raleigh Ringers has released six CDs, and two DVDs.
The group has performed in 39 states and in France, Great Britain, and Canada and appeared on nationally syndicated radio programs. The Raleigh Ringers sponsors two annual handbell festivals (one geared for youth and one for adults), a professional performance event (Virtuoso), workshops, classes, and reading sessions in Raleigh throughout the year. The group performs on one of the most extensive collections of bells and bell-like instruments owned by any handbell ensemble in the world.
The Raleigh Ringers has made a significant impact on the world’s handbell music repertoire by commissioning more than 130 compositions and arrangements for handbells. The Raleigh Ringers promotes the art of handbell ringing by offering occasional workshops, clinics, and master classes for bell ringers. Prior to their appearance in Schwab Auditorium, members of the ringers will conduct an educational workshop in State College Presbyterian Church.
The concert will feature the world premiere of a piece commissioned jointly by the Raleigh Ringers and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Composed by Dr. William Payn, professor emeritus of music at Bucknell University. In his distinguished career at Bucknell, Payn Payn’s directed the Rooke Chapel Choir, the Rooke Chapel Ringers and the Bucknell University Concert Chorale while receiving university awards for teaching and contributions to the university.
Members of The Raleigh Ringers will present a handbell workshop at the State College Presbyterian Church the morning of the concert. For more information about the workshop, please contact the Festival office. The performance is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.
