Thrifty as I am, I have always loved the idea of ‘Something from Nothing.’ This elegant hand puppet of King Achashverosh is made from the sleeve of an old wool sweater. His gown used to be an old Purim costume I made many years ago. The bells and buttons originate from a large collection of ‘lost’ items. The only ‘new’ material is the thread used to bind everything together.
Put on a Purim Spiel for your favorite audience or bring the puppet to synagogue to use as a Grogger – as the bells make enough noise to drown out the name of Haman. You can also use this template to create the entire cast of the Purim story: Queen Esther, Queen Vashti, Mordechai and Haman. Materials needed: Sewing machine (optional) Scissors Embroidery Needles, different sizes Thread, the color of your fabric Embroidery floss, different colors Sleeve of an old wool sweater, felted (also OK to use new felted wool) Scraps of felted wool in assorted colors Fancy fabric for dress Buttons, bells for decoration Step-by-Step Instructions: BODY 1.
Cut off the sleeve of a felted sweater to about 13 inches long. 2. Turn the sleeve inside out. 3. Cut out the puppet template, draw onto the sleeve (with the cuff being the top of the puppet). 4. Saw along the lines of the head. (Sewing machine is easiest – but a simple back-stitch will do just fine.) 5. Cut along the seam – leaving ½ “ seam allowance. 6. Just below the head, cut a 2 ¼ “ opening for the arms, careful not to open the seam that you just sewed.
(We will add the arms at a later point.) 7. Turn the sleeve right side out and put to aside. FACE 8. Cut out a circle from a light-colored scrap of felted wool. (ca. 3 1/4 “ diameter) 9. Draw eyes, nose and mouth onto circle. 10. Stitch eyes, nose, and mouth onto circle using embroidery floss. 11. Stitch the face to the puppet with a whip stitch appliqué. (I like to use contrasting colors – 3 strands of the embroidery floss are sufficient.
) CROWN 12. Draw the shape of a crown onto a paper, cut out and trace onto a golden-colored scrap of felted wool (or any color that suits your design). Cut out the crown from the felt scrap. 13. Stitch a running stitch using three strands of embroidery floss along the seams – I chose a gold/yellow floss. Pick a contrasting color to add a second running stitch – I chose a purple floss. 14.
Embellish with buttons, if desired. 15. Place aside for later. GARMENT 16. Choose a glamorous fabric for your puppet’s dress. Copy the templates onto a paper, cut out and trace onto the fabric – adding a ½“ for seam allowance (Two slim front pieces, one larger back piece). 17. Sew the three pieces together and hem the gown. 18. Stitch the gown to the puppet in a few places. 19. Embellish the gown with bells or buttons.
CROWN (continued) 20. Sew the crown onto the face, careful not to sew through the two layers of the puppet. Begin with the double running stitch on the face side, complete on the backside of the head. 21. Add strands of hair to your hand puppet. Choose a yarn the color of hair and stitch around the circumference of the head underneath the rim of the crown. I used a long thread of wool without cutting it into smaller pieces to create curls for my king.
HANDS 22. Draw a template for the hands, cut out, pin to wool felt and trace. 23. Cut out hands from wool; sew the circumference of the hands, leaving the bottom side open. 24. Turn puppet inside out, pin hands to puppet and sew onto the sleeve. FINISHED AND ENJOY 25. Turn right side out. 26. Put on a puppet show with your favorite kid! Advertisements
