G Fine Art is thrilled to open its Fall 2017 season with “Cubes and Pyramids Share the Same Base”, a solo show of new work by Maggie Michael, the artist’s sixth exhibition with the gallery. Her recent work explores the present by identifying questions, experiences, and unsettled spaces using the tools and ground of a painter.A keen observer filtering the contemporary world, Michael mines elements of literature, art history, and current events to combine with her poetic, painterly application.
The results present “inputs turned into outputs” as Kriston Capps has written.Michael’s exquisite handling of paint and other materials on canvas enables her to sustain a balance between the active states of her ideas and gestures. She provides visual events in ink, charcoal, graphite, pigment, acrylic, spray paint, and enamel that signal, alarm, and cue viewers to locate and orient their own rivers and boulders of interpretation.
In this new body of work, the tensions created by sediments and eruptions of painterly activity produce forms of abstract messaging and storied constructivism. Contrapuntal exchanges between the spare and the labor intensive, colorful and colorless, improvisatory and deliberate, disrupt boundaries, distinctions, and difference.Speaking of the exhibition’s title, Michael said, “Cubes and pyramids share the same base.
It's a square fact. The obvious outcomes of difference moving from one plane to another are visible when walking the perimeter, and when seen from above. Why does the cube crumble first? Corners chip. The force from bottom to pinnacle seems pressured to burst. Instead, the point is dramatically supported and protected. If both were turned upside down, only one would fall. Building blocks illuminate.
Do civic lessons for adults start here?”Michael received her MFA from American University in 2002, an MA from San Francisco State University in 2000, and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 1996. Her paintings are included in several public collections including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the United States Embassies in Romania and Barbados, the Federal Reserve Board, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, American University, and the University of Maryland.
She has been awarded numerous Artist Fellowship Grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, The Trawick Prize, a Banff Centre for the Arts residency, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant, and an Artist’s Residency at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Past exhibitions - including “Clones” (2002), “Run” (2004), “Open End” (2006), “All At Once” (2009),"Tattoos of Ships“ (2010), "There is No Rising or Setting Sun” (2011), “Some Threads are Loosely Tied” (2014), “Colored Grounds and Perfect Xs (2015), and “A Phrase Hung in Midair as if Frozen” (2016) - have received critical acclaim.
