We have a Family 4-Pack of tickets to give away for a production at Carousel Theatre for Young People, just across the way from us.
This is a very special production in that this one is for babies and toddlers! And parents too! If you’ve got children under 3 and would like to enjoy this very special presentation, Enter to Win here at the Kids Market. We are open regular hours on the Victoria Day weekend. Saturday, Sunday & Monday 10 AM to 6 PM. Come Play! Advertisements Here at the Kids Market, we know kids… that’s a given.
Sometimes we like to spend some time thinking about some of your other family members too. With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, June 14th, it’s the perfect time to send mom some high fives. For all that she does and all that she is, we tip our hats to all of the mother’s out there. We appreciate all your hard work and all the effort you put into making your kids’ lives fabulous. You truly are the best.
Here’s a fun Mother’s Day activity – try asking your kids these questions – their answers can be hilarious! For example, kids often think if you’re 25 years old, you’re ancient. Never mind if you’re considerably older than that! So have a laugh on your special day, do something nice for yourself and enjoy all that being a mom includes. Happy Mother’ s Day Mom! We hope it’s an extra special one.
It’s always exciting when there’s a new addition to a family. All of us here at the Kids Market are certainly thrilled when our little community grows! All of our stores are family-friendly, locally-owned shops with owners and staff who are all part of our community. Not to mention, we provide goods & services for our visitors that are unique and are geared towards kids and the young at heart.
Obviously, we get family. So when we add a new ‘family member’ it can make us all pretty proud. Our latest addition has us jumping for joy. Or maybe wiggling in circles for joy is a better way to put it. So we thought a formal introduction is in order! The Commercial Drive Licorice Parlour has been a Commercial Drive staple since 2013 and this month they open their second location, right here at the Kids Market called, The Granville Island Licorice Parlour! The store is full of incredible deliciousness, with the bulk of their products being, well, licorice-based candy.
They offer 65 types of imported licorice along with a few other candy options, many that are gluten-free, gelatin-free and sugar-free. The various types will definitely appeal to little ones as they include soft, chewy Zoo Animals, Pigs, Monkeys and more. AND they are free of high-fructose corn syrup and artificial dyes so you can feel good about letting your kids indulge a bit. There is a lot of yumminess in store for parents too.
Caramel sticks, which are licorice wrapped in caramel, licorice soft bites and some of the stronger, salty licorice flavors may appeal more to adults. Which is good, right? That means you won’t have to share! Oh, we should probably mention that our “wiggling in circles” for joy is brought on by the hula-hoops that the Licorice Parlour carries. It really is the best of all worlds…..a market for kids, yummy & healthy treats plus hula hoops to enjoy after your treat.
There’s definitely room out back by the pond for some hula hoop-style fun for everyone. If it’s been awhile since you’ve given a hula hoop a whirl, you really must try it. It seems to get a bit more challenging the older you get! So give it a whirl and let us know if it’s just like getting on a bike after many years of not riding. Better yet, share some pictures of all the fun your family gets up to while you’re here to play shop and enjoy yourselves.
We love getting pictures on social media of our visitors enjoying their time here. #kidsmarketgranvilleisland Catherine Mellon is a Vancouver-based digital marketer and mom. We always have a good time and so do kids of all ages so join us this Spring Break for all your family fun needs! Catherine Mellon is a Vancouver-based digital marketer and mom. Feel free to say hello on any of the Kids Market social profiles! This weekend marks the end of our inaugural kids’ art show & auction. The Show Us Your Art Show has been on at the Kids Market since February 12th displaying more than 60 pieces of art created by kids.
All art is available via auction at www.showusyourart.ca/auction with the majority of the proceeds going to the Children’s Heart Network. While the idea to hold a kids art show and auction came from wanting to do something new and different, there have been a lot of benefits to all of those who have been involved. The 1st Annual Show Us Your Art Show is on until 6PM, Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the Kids Market, Granville Island.
Art is available for purchase via auction at www.showusyourart.ca/auction Our first priority is always the kids – as it is for parents. What’s best for them, what’s most fun, what’s safest, what is age appropriate and what encourages healthy development. Kids’ arts & crafts are something kids are always engaging in at home, at daycare, at school or in art classes. And so they should be! Research shows that there are numerous developmental benefits for children when they create art.
Art helps children connect their thoughts and feelings with visual information. It helps them develop spatial awareness and strengthens problem-solving and critical thinking skills. So creating art isn’t only about using pretty colors & making interesting things! For our art show, there were a few other things we thought would be great for kids. By donating a portion of the proceeds to a local children’s charity, The Children’s Heart Network, we hoped to show our young artists a few things.
One was to teach them about charity, how charities work and how people can get involved to offer support. For some young artists, unsure of whether or not they wanted to part with their beloved creations, we hoped that learning their art could be used to help other children might inspire them to join us and to help children learn about how easy it is to help others. Art is a reflection of a community’s culture – whether that’s a country, a city or a particular demographic.
It’s important to continue to encourage children to value their own creativity. While not everyone will grow up to be professional artists, it is our goal to encourage & nurture creativity with fun events that bring our community together. We have made some new friends, connected with some of the ‘heart families’ who deal with the effects of congenital heart disease on a daily basis and we have honored each other’s unique creativity! So while the Show Us Your Art Show is about art, it’s also about our community and what we can do to come together to offer each other support and encouragement while we cheer each other on.
A hearty thank you goes out to everyone who participated by contributing art, helped set the show up, offered some of the behind-the-scenes administrative support and everyone who bid on or came to see the artwork. Thank you for your support. There are still a couple of days left to visit the Kids Market and browse the art and/or make an online bid. We hope to see you there. Feel free to say ‘hi’ on any of the Kids Market’s social media profiles. What a whirlwind of a month we have coming up! Oftentimes, January and February can be really slow around the city in general. Truthfully, January was pretty average for us and can be counted as one of our slower times of the year. But this February, this won’t be the case. There is so much going on that we can barely contain our excitement.
There is definitely something for everyone plus we are supporting a number of causes this month and encourage you to help us do so while you enjoy some time with us here at The Kids Market. This year February 12th is a very special day. We are kicking off the first Kids Art Show & Auction – The Show Us Your Art Show! We have over 50 works of art on display created by local children between the ages of 5 & 12.
Now if that’s not fun enough, the majority of the proceeds of the art that is auctioned will be going to the Children’s Heart Network – a BC based, not-for-profit organization that offers support to children living with congenital heart disease and their families. A number of children who are members of the Children’s Heart Network are submitting their art in the show as well. February is Heart Month so between our fundraiser for the Children’s Heart Network and Valentine’s Day there is going to be a lot of love floating around the Kids Market.
Not to mention we are open on February 13th, which is BC Family Day. We welcome you to come play, enjoy some mid-winter time with your family and browse the amazing art. Of course all of the more than 25 locally-owned and operated retail outlets will be open and happy to see you. It’s hard to believe, but that’s not it! February 22nd is Pink Shirt Day in BC! And we want to help end bullying by spreading kindness, sharing a message of anti-bullying and of course, having some fun! In keeping with our Art Show & Auction theme for the month, we’ve had some of our artists who are participating in the show create banners with anti-bullying sayings and we’ll offer some pink themed art for our visitors from 3PM to 5PM that day.
We are so excited about this month of activity & hope you’re able to join in on some of the fun. Remember the artwork will be hung from February 12th until February 26th so make sure to come by during that time. We would love to see you! Virtual Reality sounds like something that belongs to the future doesn’t it? Like maybe to a time 100 years from now when we eat fake food and exist in a world that’s kind of like life as we know it, but not really. Wondering what Virtual Reality could possibly have to do with the place for kids in Vancouver? First, we’ll take a quick peek at what Virtual Reality really is. Then we’ll tell you why we’re sharing about it.
The phrase’ Virtual Reality’ is a tech-related term which refers to “the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment which can be interacted with, in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment”. Sounds about right. A bit space-age-ish but about right. Let’s see what else we can use to explain this interesting concept.
According to the Guardian.com, the most important piece of equipment necessary to get the full effect of Virtual Reality (which requires its own specially created apps by the way!) is the headset, a device like a thick pair of goggles that goes over your eyes. So, in a nut shell, it’s a video game, a ride, and an experience. The ultimate fun happens when used with the right kind of goggles and a good headset designed to work with ‘game specific optics’.
Ever wish you could check out this Virtual Reality thing without spe nding a fortune or learning a new technical program app or device? What if we told you we have Virtual Reality right here at the Kids Market? No, we don’t mean the overwhelm that comes from your kids getting so excited you can’t see straight, we mean the real thing, a real virtual reality experience! Visit VRFuntastic World on the second floor, here at the Kids Market, and choose from a selection of virtual reality ‘rides’ to try out.
Unfortunately, we don’t have super cool headsets for you to use but that’s only because you don’t need them at VRFuntastic World. Your virtual experience happens when you sit inside one of 4 FUNTASTIC EGG rides that will take you on a 360 degree adventure using motion and VR Glasses to make YOU part of the adventure. You chose the adventure – we provide the fun. We even have some rides available for kids as young as 5 plus a great selection for older children and adults too.
This YouTube video will show you what you can expect when you take a ride in the Virtuix Omni™, 360-degree motion platform. VRFuntastic World has rates for groups including Field Trips! Check them out here or ask about their packages next time you’re at the Kids Market!
